In Diné thought, marijuana is a sacred herb that was harvested in the mountains and was used for specific healings. Like human beings, it has five fingers and is considered a relative. In the instance that marijuana is consumed without reverence or the intentions of healing, it has the power to scramble the mind after use and can cause loss of direction in life, laziness, and loss of motivation. For this reason, Diné elders say to respect the plant and that mountain tobacco (Dził nat'oh) must be smoked after to bring the mind back into balance. Jiní.
